Excellent read. Explores a fascinating part of history that is meticulously researched by the author. I quickly became invested in the characters and riveting storyline, making for a fast paced read. Highly recommend.

Congratulations to Paul Fleming on this wonderful piece of historical fiction. This was a subject that over my vast amount of reading I had never come across (POW camps in the US during WWII). I loved this story. It had it all!

Thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the history I was never aware of. Want my grandchildren to read this to have a better grasp of their country’s history and the sacrifices made by everyday Americans. The development of the characters helped the reader to understand both the enemy, those charged with running the camps, the lives of black Americans during Jim Crow. Well done.

If you’ve read a lot of WWII historical novels, read this one. I loved this book—such rich characters, perspectives, and unique settings including Stephan, a German soldier who is captured in North Africa and sent to a POW camp in Texas. Rose, a young German-American woman helping run her family’s Texas cotton farm while her brothers are away fighting in Europe. And so many more. The book was hard to put down, incredibly uplifting, and taught me history I never knew. I didn’t want it to end.

Great story line. Each character is well developed. Very well written. This is the second book I’ve read about German POWs imprisoned in the US. I live in Texas and love to read stories set in the state. This book left me wanting a sequel. Please continue writing such engrossing books!

Magnificent Story

Intriguing plot line that combines little known WW 2 history with the impact of families separated by their wartime obligations. Excellent read, best historical fiction I have read since “The Killer Angels.” Read this book, you will love it as much as I did. Love to see this as a movie!

Author hits a grand slam in his first at bat!

I have never been much of a novel reader preferring historical, factual events. However, I was intrigued by the story line and decided to give it a shot. What a shot! You know it’s good when you look forward to picking up the book the next day and continuing the intrigue. It was an easy read and I was done in three days. I wanted more! The end was fantastic and well thought out. Looking forward to Mr. Fleming’s next story.

Must Read Book

A compelling, captivating, and beautifully written novel. Fleming is truly a gifted storyteller and polished writer! Some lovable, and some not-so-lovable characters make this story of a POW camp in the USA during WWII a true page-turner. This reader will be anxiously awaiting another novel by this up-and-coming author!

A truly entertaining thought-provoking read that explores the concept of courage on many levels

When Courage Comes is a truly enjoyable read. It uncovers an aspect of World War II that few have approached – prisoners of war and who they really were, what their experiences were actually like. It also paints an insightful picture of what life was like back at home, on American soil, while a war against the Nazis was raging overseas.

The reader is immediately drawn in to a captivating story with characters who are truly human and truly relatable. I just love the Bauer family – their strength in the face of adversity, their humor, their camaraderie, and most of all, their obvious care and love for one another. You can’t help but see some of yourself in Rose, and in Ralph, and wonder what you’d do if you were in their shoes. And the true humanity and internal conflicts of Stephan, the POW, are totally relatable as well.

When Courage Comes is an entertaining story, but it also digs deeper, to explore the concept of courage on a number of levels. The storyline is anything but predictable, and leaves readers with an overarching message of hope — and an understanding of our own personal call to be courageous in our own lives.

Definitely a page turner!

If you’re looking for a gripping story, developed through a cast of captivating characters, and created within an authentic WWII setting, then this is the book for you. As the story progresses, Fleming touches on multiple ideologies that make us question our own actions or inactions. The various elements of the story seamlessly intersect with each other, and eventually culminate in an uplifting ending. But just as the novel is winding down, we are presented with an unexpected conclusion that leaves us wanting to know more. Another novel perhaps? We can only hope…
